James K. Cameron | Artistic Director
James K. Cameron is a distinguished member of Los Angeles’ musical and operatic community. Wearing several related hats, he teaches vocal technique and operatic interpretation; manages and consults with opera singers and conductors through his own firm, Cameron Artists International, Ltd.; acts as speaker and master teacher, both locally and for venues including the San Francisco Conservatory, Yale University, and Opera New Zealand; accompanies singers in master class and recital; and produces master classes and classical recitals. He has served as a member of the Boards of Directors of San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola Opera Program, of Long Beach Opera, and of the Opera League of Los Angeles.
A Los Angeles native, Mr. Cameron began his piano studies at age 4, and went on to work with notable teachers including Dr. David DiChiera (founding General Director of Opera Pacific and Michigan Opera Theatre), Ernest Hughes (a student of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Vernon Spencer of The Juilliard School and John Crown of USC), and the late Adolph Baller (accompanist to Sir Yehudi Menuhin) at Stanford University. He also has studied voice with Pamela Fry and Janet Parlova of the San Francisco Conservatory, acclaimed soprano Ruth Falcon (Metropolitan Opera and the Mannes School), Doris Yarick Cross (Yale), Barbara Honn (Cincinnati Conservatory), and acclaimed Australian soprano Rosamund Illing; and vocal interpretation with Thomas Grubb at Juilliard, Marcie Stapp of the San Francisco Conservatory, and Peter Grunberg of the San Francisco Opera and Symphony. He studied Alexander Technique with Frank Ottiwell of American Conservatory Theatre and Feldenkrais Technique with Skip Bockenfeld of San Francisco.
Singers from Mr. Cameron’s voice studio have performed with Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, Long Beach Opera, the San Francisco Symphony, and numerous other orchestras, opera companies and companies on the West Coast and throughout the U.S. His management clients have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, the Royal Opera (Covent Garden), Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Opera Australia, Opera New Zealand, and numerous other prestigious opera companies and orchestras both domestically and abroad.
After his graduation from Grover Cleveland High School in Reseda, California, Mr. Cameron received his Bachelor of Arts degree (with Distinction) from Stanford University, and his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. In addition to his endeavors in the musical field, he continues his work as an attorney, representing clients in the music and entertainment industries, and has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of West Los Angeles School of Law. A dedicated “problem solver”, he also is active in the mediation community, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Mediation Association. He resides and maintains his office and studio in Encino.
